Nicola Todd, recent graduate of the MLitt Theatre Studies programme in the School of CCA, is presenting a rehearsed reading of her new play Cross/Fade at the Beacon Arts Centre on January 15th. Cross/Fade is Nicola’s professional writing debut and was written under the mentorship of Douglas Maxwell during her time studying playwriting on the MLitt in Theatre Studies. The play shifts between reality and the internally constructed fantasy world of the central character, Rab. Within Rab’s fantasy everything is exaggerated to the extreme and as the play progresses it becomes more and more distorted as he becomes more and more detached from reality. He aspires to become a top-class DJ and spin the decks on the Ibiza club circuit but feels trapped by his anxiety and suffocated in a world where the unscrupulous Mr. King hold all the cards; cards which could crumble at a moment’s notice. Cross/Fade brings to life ideas surrounding anxiety and intrusive thoughts and explores their impact on the individuals affected by these issues and those close to them. We congratulate Nicola on her writing debut and wish her every success with this exciting event.
